In the Making: The Story Behind Two LYFER Birding Accessories

In the Making is an Avian Journal series that takes you behind the products we create, introducing the makers who help bring them to life and the thinking, care and collaboration behind every piece.

For this edition, we travel to Poland and Greece to meet the makers behind two LYFER birding accessories: our Enamel Field Mug, handmade by Emalco, and our Double Paracord Binocular Strap, handcrafted by Hyperion.

Different products. Different processes. Both made to accompany you outdoors.

Thoughtfully Made for Time Outside

Birding gear should do its job, but that does not mean they need to be purely functional and not consider how it looks when it is out in the field.

A field mug becomes part of a birding adventure, perhaps a roadside stop or warming up after a chilly winter bird walk. A binocular strap, on the other hand, carries one of the most important tools a birder takes outdoors.

For LYFER, these familiar birding gear essentials presented an opportunity: to make them practical, distinctive and connected to the culture of birding. Doing that meant finding specialist makers capable of bringing more than manufacturing to the process.

Tradition, Steel and Fire

Based in Siedlce, Poland, Emalco is a family-owned business led by Anna and Waldemar Brzozowski. The company specialises in handmade enamelware produced using techniques that have existed for more than 100 years.

Enamelware was once part of daily life throughout Poland. Mugs, pots and plates were found in city and country homes alike, creating an enduring connection between the material, family life and time spent outdoors.

For Anna and Waldemar, preserving that history is personal.

Emalco’s team includes specialists in metalwork, enamelling, firing, decorating, quality control and shipping. Each person contributes a different skill to a process that remains largely completed by hand. It is this combination of tradition, community and pride in the finished object that attracted us to Emalco.

How the LYFER Enamel Field Mug Is Made

The making of an enamel Field Mug begins with sheet steel. The metal is cut and pressed under high pressure to form the body of the mug before its handle and rim are welded into place.

A grounding coat is then applied to prepare the steel for its outer enamel layers. The mug is fired at temperatures of approximately 850°C, inspected, coloured and fired again.

Decoration comes towards the end of this surprisingly involved process. The ceramic graphic is applied by hand, dried and fired into the final layer of enamel. Further quality inspections take place between these stages. Emalco explains that this combination of quality steel, high-temperature firing and fired ceramic decoration is what gives its enamelware its strength and lasting finish.

For the LYFER Field Mug, that decoration is a wraparound illustration by artist Liza Lluma. Forest, wetland, city and sky come together in LYFER’s habitat colours, creating an imagined place where people and birds live alongside one another.

It is more than a picture placed on a mug. The illustration is permanently fired into an object designed to be used in an office to the depths of a massive birding adventure.

The Marks of Something Handmade

Look closely at handmade enamelware and you may notice subtle dots, variations or shifts in the finish. Emalco considers these small differences part of the character of the process: evidence that the object has passed through human hands, intense heat and several stages of making.

No two mugs will be completely identical, and that is part of their appeal.

Each one is durable enough to gather its own marks and memories from the outdoors, becoming more personal with use rather than remaining perfectly untouched. The stain of tea on enamelware may well tell a story of a moment when a mug is forgotten in favour of falling for a call of an unknown bird for 6 hours.

From a Personal Project to Hyperion

The story of Hyperion began in Patras, Greece, in 2016, when founder Pavlos started making paracord straps for his own cameras.

As an experienced photographer with a strong technical mindset, he wanted something durable, practical and visually considered. Other photographers began noticing his straps and asking for their own. Requests from friends became orders, orders became collections, and a personal project became Hyperion Handmade Camera Straps.

The range gradually expanded beyond its original paracord designs to incorporate leather, acrylic rope and metal components. Today, Hyperion offers more than 1,000 possible colour and design combinations, with each order prepared in Patras and shipped around the world.

Even the name carries an unexpected connection to LYFER. In Greek mythology, Hyperion was the Titan associated with heavenly light. Giannis also points to its meaning as “the one who is high above the ground”a rather fitting coincidence for a maker now connected with birding.

Greece also holds a special place in the story of LYFER. Co-founder James Lambrou is of Greek heritage and has a deep connection to the country, its landscapes, food, language and culture.

An Idea Brought to Life Together

We approached Hyperion with an idea for a Double Paracord Binocular Strap that would bring its camera-strap expertise into the world of birdwatching.

The collaboration became especially meaningful when by pure coincidence we were travelling to Greece and then learnt that our maker friends were based out of Patras, a place we were already visiting. We of course, met the team in person. Conversations moved from screens to the workshop as we explored materials, construction, colours and the details needed to turn the original concept into a finished product.

For Giannis, Hyperion’s greatest source of pride is its ability to take a custom idea and work out how to make it real. He describes the resulting LYFER strap as a product unlike anything else Hyperion has produced.

Its double-braided paracord construction increases strength and helps distribute the weight of binoculars across the neck or shoulder. LYFER green, black and orange binding threads introduce our habitat colours, while dark chrome carabiners provide a secure connection.

It is technical knowledge expressed through something with a little more individuality, a piece of birding gear designed to perform in the field without disappearing into it.

Between Water and Sky

As part of every In the Making feature, we invite our makers to choose a bird from their part of the world.

Hyperion chose the Common Kingfisher (Alcedo atthis), known in Greece as the Alkyóni. Its brilliant blue upperparts, warm orange underparts and fast, precise dives make it appear, in Giannis’s words, like “a small living gem moving between water and sky.”

The bird also holds a place in Greek mythology. The story of Alcyone gave rise to the expression “halcyon days”: a period of calm weather said to have been created so she could nest safely during winter.

For Giannis, the Kingfisher represents serenity, hope and renewal, a reminder that moments of beauty and balance can still be found among life’s storms. The Common Kingfisher is a native resident species in Greece. BirdLife International species factsheet

The Story Behind What We Carry

One product begins with sheet steel, powdered glass and fire in Poland. The other begins with paracord, a photographer’s idea and specialist hands in Greece.

Both have become birding accessories made to accompany people outdoors, and both carry the story of the people who brought them to life.
