We are a relaxed birdwatching and social club that brings together people from all walks of life through a shared love of birds, birding and the city of Melbourne.

Hosted by James and Josh from LYFER, our small, thoughtfully curated gatherings bring together bird walks, good company and the cultural life of the city.

Proudly based in Melbourne (Naarm), we welcome locals, visitors from regional Victoria, interstate travellers and international guests. Whether you have been birding for years or are simply curious, you will be in good company.

What Our Gatherings Look Like

Each gathering is thoughtfully planned around the route, timing, group size and where we stop along the way.

Some centre on a bird walk, while others bring birding into Melbourne’s food, art, culture and everyday city life.

Past gatherings have included:

• Royal Botanic Gardens - a bird walk followed by brunch
• Albert Park - a morning bird walk and breakfast at Clementine
• Fitzroy and Treasury Gardens - birds, laneways, urban art and a social dinner at the Natural History Bar & Grill
• Western Treatment Plant - breakfast with Brolgas, a morning of birding and lunch on the car bonnets
• Curated dinners and social events - where birds and nature are woven into the setting, food or conversation

Some experiences may return, but every gathering is considered individually so it remains relaxed, memorable and easy for people to connect.

Who's Part of the Club?

One of the things we love most about the Melbourne Bird Social Club is the wonderful mix of people it brings together.

Our members span different ages, backgrounds and levels of birding experience. You’ll meet lifelong birders, complete beginners, photographers, conservationists, creatives, students, retirees, professionals and visitors discovering Melbourne through its birds.

Many members come on their own, while others join us with a partner, family member or friend. Some can identify birds by their calls. Others are still learning the difference between an Australian Magpie and a Pied Currawong.

Experience isn’t what brings us together. Curiosity, kindness, respect and a shared love of birds are.

If you enjoy birds, the outdoors and the social side of birding, you'll feel right at home.

Why We Started the Club

Since launching LYFER, we’ve met so many people who share our connection to birds and birdwatching.

Many told us how birding had changed their lives and how much they wanted to meet others who felt the same. They weren’t necessarily looking for a guided bird tour or a traditional birding group, but something relaxed and social, where birds, good conversation and new connections could come together.

People kept asking us if we knew of a club like that.

"We've watched complete strangers become great friends, simply because they stopped to look at the same bird."

The club also grew from the thinking behind our Urban Birder Guide, a unique and original approach to birding in the modern world.

For us, birding doesn’t need to exist in isolation. It can be woven into the cultural fabric of a city, alongside food, art, architecture, neighbourhoods and everyday life.

Melbourne Bird Social Club gave us a way to bring that idea to life, while contributing something meaningful to the wider birding community.

Becoming a Member

Melbourne Bird Social Club is free to join, with upcoming gatherings and event details shared through our private Facebook group.

Gatherings are intentionally kept small, so places may be limited and advance registration is often required.
