Melbourne Bird Social Club

Discover Melbourne through birds, people and place.
Melbourne Bird Social Club is a relaxed social club for people who enjoy birds, being outdoors and experiencing Melbourne from a different perspective.
Hosted by James and Josh from LYFER, our small, thoughtfully curated gatherings bring together birdwatching, good company and the cultural life of the city.
Proudly based in Melbourne (Naarm), we welcome locals, visitors from regional Victoria, interstate travellers and international guests. Whether you have been birding for years or are simply curious, you will be in good company.

Why We Started the Club
Since launching LYFER, we’ve been lucky to meet so many people who, like us, feel a real connection to birds and birdwatching.
Many have shared how birding has changed their lives in some way, and how much they would love to meet other people who feel the same. They weren’t necessarily looking for a guided bird tour or a traditional birding group, but somewhere relaxed and social where birds, good conversation and genuine connection could all come together.
People kept asking us if we knew of a club like that.
We looked for it too. We were sure it must be out there somewhere, but we couldn’t quite find what we had in mind.
So, in true LYFER spirit, we made one.
Melbourne Bird Social Club grew from that simple idea: creating a welcoming place for people to meet, enjoy birding in their own way and experience Melbourne with others who understand why a bird flying overhead can stop a conversation in its tracks.
"We've watched complete strangers become great friends, simply because they stopped to look at the same bird."
What Our Gatherings Look Like
Every gathering is carefully planned to feel special, comfortable and welcoming.
We put a lot of thought into the route, timing, group size and where we stop along the way. Some gatherings centre on a bird walk, while others bring birds into Melbourne’s food, art, culture and everyday city life.
Past gatherings have included:
- Royal Botanic Gardens — a bird walk followed by brunch
- Albert Park — a morning bird walk and breakfast at Clementine
- Fitzroy and Treasury Gardens — birds, laneways, urban art and a social dinner at the Natural History Bar & Grill
- Western Treatment Plant — breakfast with Brolgas and lunch on the car bonnets, with many bird walks.
- Curated dinners and social events — where birding and nature are woven into the theme, setting, food or conversation.
Some experiences may return, but each gathering is considered in its own way so it remains relaxed, memorable and easy for people to connect.

Who's Part of the Club?
One of the things we love most about the Melbourne Bird Social Club is the wonderful mix of people it brings together.
Our members span all ages and come from all walks of life. You'll meet lifelong birders who are generous with their knowledge, people buying their first pair of bins, photographers, conservationists, students, retirees, professionals, creatives, visitors to Melbourne and people who simply enjoy spending time outdoors.
Many members come on their own, while others join us with a partner, family member or friend. Some can identify birds by their calls. Others are still learning the difference between a Magpie and a Currawong.
Experience isn't what brings us together. Curiosity, kindness, respect and an open mind are.
If you enjoy birds, the outdoors and the social side of birding, you'll feel right at home.
Becoming a Member
Melbourne Bird Social Club is managed through a private Facebook group, where we announce upcoming gatherings, share event details and keep members up to date.
To become a member, simply click on the link below to join the Facebook group and answer a few short questions. They’re not a test. We simply like to know a little about the people joining and make sure everyone is looking for the same welcoming, respectful and social environment.
Once you're approved, you'll be able to see upcoming gatherings and register your interest in attending.
Our gatherings are intentionally kept small, usually around 15 people, so everyone has the opportunity to connect. Because of this, some events fill quickly and may have a waitlist.
