Photographer, Mentor, Tour Guide and Coffee Lover.
THEIR STORY
David Stowe is an award-winning bird and wildlife photographer, educator, and tour guide with three decades of experience behind the lens. His photography journey began with weddings and portraits before he discovered his true passion: photographing birds and wildlife.
A devoted father and husband who loves coffee and birds in almost equal measure, David brings both technical expertise and genuine enthusiasm to his work. His competition awards and judging credentials reflect his mastery of the craft, but it's his passion for education that truly drives him.
In 2017, David co-founded Flock Wildlife Tours with ecologist and photographer Henry Cook. What started as a vision to help people create better images has become his primary focus and greatest joy. Specialising in small group tours and personalised one-on-one workshops, David is dedicated to sharing his knowledge, as well as capturing images that aid conservation efforts.
What is one bird encounter you will never forget?
Can I really only pick just one? says David. Im afraid so - says LYFER....!
If pressed, I'd say Western Queensland, 2013. My mates and I stumbled across a dam where Flock Bronzewings were gathering. We set up camp and settled in at dawn, camouflaged and quiet, watching their numbers build on the gibber plains. What started as dozens became hundreds, then thousands - until at least 20,000 to 30,000 birds wheeled around the dam, filling the sky. They truly lived up to their name as a 'flock.'
But also, that one time, when the Western Parotia dancing in the gloom of a West Papuan rainforest…
or that other time, when that Grey Falcon calmly plucking a budgie right in front of us…
LYFER says "DAVID!!!!"
You’ve got a golden ticket to go anywhere in the world to see a bird? Where would you go and why?
Easy—Shoebill!
This prehistoric-looking bird is number one on my bucket list. There's something so compelling about a bird that looks like it should fall over because it's bill is so big!
A golden ticket to Uganda would mean paddling through the marshes with a local guide, waiting for that incredible moment to sight and photograph one.
How is birding part of your life today?
Birds have been central to my life for 25 years as a birder and photographer, but they've taken on even greater significance over the past 8 years since Henry Cook and I founded Flock Wildlife Photography Tours.
While I definitely still love getting out there with my camera, the real joy now comes from sharing that experience, helping others develop their field techniques and post-processing skills to capture their own stunning images. I'm incredibly fortunate to combine my passion for birds with teaching, taking small groups to remarkable destinations across Australia and beyond, and watching them grow as photographers while we encounter incredible species together.
