What is one bird encounter you will never forget?

In 2015 I travelled to the Galapagos Islands. I was particularly drawn to the unique wildlife the island inhabits. I was really into photography back then but me being me, I couldn’t just stay with the tour group. Curiosity got the better of me, so I wandered off, climbed down a few rocks, and tried to get a more intimate angle.

Before I knew it, I was practically surrounded, just me, my camera, and flock of boobies (the bird kind, of course! haha). It was going great… until out of nowhere, one swooped me! Wings in my face, beak flashing, the whole deal. First and only time I’ve been attacked by a bird and hopefully the last. I laughed it off, but in that moment I realised I might have gotten a little too close for comfort.

You’ve got a golden ticket to go anywhere in the world to see a bird? Where would you go and why?

Whilst I have been fortunate to travel to various parts of the world I have seen some beautiful birds in my time. However, if I had to choose, I'd choose Australia. I really think here in Australia we have some pretty unique bird species.

From rainforests, wetlands, dry outback and coastal regions, it never ceases to amaze me how our native bird species have evolved to adapt to these various environments with some resulting in unique traits and appearances to blend in. One that springs to mind is the Tawny Frogmouth. A bird that mimics a tree branch! That's pretty cool. No wonder I haven't discovered one in the wild yet!

How is birding part of your life today?

Quote from Artist James Smith on birding - sometimes I whistle back and often I find myself striking up a conversation

When I get some down time, I like to escape the pace of city life and immerse myself in Mother Nature’s garden. I often head out for walks in the hills, where I get a chance to breathe and slow down.

Along the way, I listen to the many calls of the birds, each with their own unique song. Sometimes I whistle back, and often I find myself striking up a little conversation with one, a small but meaningful connection with the natural world.

Every once in a while birds appear in my artistic practice, drawn not only to the beauty of their plumage but also to the way they embody fleeting, meaningful moments I’ve experienced. These encounters carry a sense of connection that I try to capture in my work. Each bird becomes more than just a subject; it's a moment shared or a moment of inspiration and celebration of these wonderful creatures.

Birds will always be and play a part of my life. Nothing beats the excitement of seeing a Yellow-tailed Black Cockatoo. Hands down my favourite!
